We are very happy to announce that Studio Dan has won the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik” (German Critics’ Award)!  This is one of Europe’s most renowned awards for outstanding CD productions and we are very proud to have received this honor for our debut release “Creatures & other stuff”. We are going to celebrate this good news at our next concerts on 22nd, 27th and 28th of May – come and party with us!

Our next concerts are coming right up! We are looking forward to a special concert at the “Cultural Node Stanica, located in the building of still operating train station in Zilina (Slovakia)”. This is a great place for contemporary arts and we’ll be playing a “best of” program, including some Zappa stuff, tunes from our debut CD and some new pieces.

After that we are holding a workshop together with three composers from very different European countries to develop a program for a presentation in 2011. Lars Skoglund (Norway), Petar Doundakoff (Bulgaria) and Ramon Bau (Spain) will be working with the ensemble on the 26th and 27th of May at the venue “limmitationes” in Rudersdorf, Austria. The rehearsals are open to the public and on the 27th we will play an informal concert including the first drafts of the new program as well as some older material.

The last concert for this spring is organised by our bassoon player´s father in a very small Austrian village called Mitterdorf. He spared no pains to make this concert possible and although we had to cancel the planned “Sparks Performance” with local artist Franz Krammer, we are happy to present our “best of” program in this area of Austria the first time.

Finally our new CD has arrived! “Creatures & other stuff” is a double CD including 17 tracks from 8 composers. CD1 is dedicated to Daniel Riegler’s pieces and the ensemble’s earliest repertoire – including “Nu Song #2″, originally released as a single in November 2008. CD2 includes a staggering variety of pieces ranging from intimate ballads to comic works of dada.

Studio Dan is a Vienna-based group of about 20 musicians and associates (depending on the project). The ensemble was founded and is led by Daniel Riegler, a composer and trombonist. The band consists of the most innovative young players from the Austrian jazz and improvised music scene as well as specialists in New Music; the music it makes is as diverse as the members’ backgrounds. SD’s huge repertoire of pieces – ranging from jazz to rock, free improv to New Music, dada and concept pieces by more than ten composers – has been developed and documented on CDs and web archives.
In 2008 the collective was invited to serve as the stage band – effectively an ensemble in residence – in Vienna’s most renowned jazz club, “Porgy & Bess”.

Das 19-köpfige, in Jazzsolisten, Blech- und Holzbläser, Streicher sowie Rhythmusgruppe unterteilte Ensemble versteht sich, wie manche der Titel – „After Decades of Doubts“, „Adieux, Lost Century“, „Attaining Eternity“ – andeuten, offenbar als eine Art Projektgruppe des musikalischen Post-Histoi­re: In kulinarischen Arrangements, in denen vor allem das Rohrblatt (Harry Sokal, Joris Roelofs) und die Stimme (Corin Curschellas) die Soloparts übernehmen, läuft man ein in den sicheren Hafen, in dem sich die Stürme der Geschichte gelegt haben, alles lichte Klassik ist und Rüegg mit Gershwin und Weill entspannt im Hot-Whirlpool sitzt.
